Verdict: "Even away from the heavy-duty shoegaze, it is abundantly clear that Rega has  built a bit of a star turn here. The Nd5 is a dramatic improvement on its long-running forebears and one of the very best designs available for £300 right now. Naturally,  most will find their way onto Rega turntables (or at least Rega tonearms), but this is a  formidable all-rounder that is likely to be every bit as capable used on other  turntables too. And so, it has to be on any shortlist at the price."

The all-new Rega Nd5 MM pickup has been developed over many years and promises significantly improved sound quality compared to the previous Exact model. Rega sees the patent-pending Nd range as a world first, using extremely powerful neodymium magnets, allowing Rega to develop a completely unique TA design.
 
Advanced technology

Every Nd5 TA system is carefully handcrafted by highly qualified Rega technicians. The design uses an entirely new generator geometry with perfect symmetry to achieve high-precision channel balance. The Nd5 also features an optimized pole spacing for excellent linearity and crosstalk behavior. The new Nd5 pickup is manufactured with miniaturized parallel coils wound in-house from 38 micron wire with only 1275 turns. This results in a low inductance, low impedance generator that allows for significantly improved high frequency reproduction.
 
Nd magnet technology

The new Rega Nd5 MM system also uses the neodymium (Nd) N55 magnet, which is commonly used in moving coil designs (including Rega's own). It is the world's most powerful commercially available magnet and a critical component that makes this unique design possible as it is more powerful than traditional bar magnets.
 
PPS housing

The complete assembly is housed in Rega's tolerance-free, injection-molded housing made of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), a lightweight and high-strength material. A low-mass TA body reduces stress on tonearm bearings and supports the free movement critical to accurate vinyl playback. The new look was inspired by Rega's hugely successful MC series.
 
Cantilever and stylus profile

The Nd5 aluminum needle carrier is designed with a perfect elliptical profile with naked diamond stylus. This needle grind, which is more complex than the Nd3, offers exceptional scanning accuracy and delivers the highest level of information from the vinyl surface.
