The LEAK Sandwich 100 is the latest addition to a line of loudspeakers whose history began in 1961 with the first LEAK Sandwich. As a compact two-way model, it carries on the fundamental technical concept of its predecessors in a contemporary form. Together with the Sandwich 150 and the Sandwich 250, it forms the current Sandwich series and is the most compact model in the lineup.

Despite its compact dimensions, the LEAK Sandwich 100 embodies precisely those characteristics that have distinguished LEAK loudspeakers for decades: speed, precision, and transparency. It was developed for modern listening environments but remains firmly rooted in the tradition of British hi-fi. Thus, the LEAK Sandwich 100 combines classic acoustic principles with modern materials and cutting-edge engineering.

A Tradition of Technical Innovation

The history of the LEAK Sandwich began in 1961, when LEAK introduced a driver technology that was extraordinary for its time: the sandwich diaphragm.

By combining a lightweight foam core with aluminum layers, a diaphragm was created that was both very rigid and exceptionally light. This allowed the chassis to respond quickly and precisely to signals, producing the clean impulse response that has been a defining feature of the Sandwich loudspeakers’ reputation.

More than six decades later, the current Sandwich series consistently builds on this idea, bringing the original concept into the present with modern materials and today’s manufacturing methods. The LEAK Sandwich 100 brings this technology to a compact speaker format that fits perfectly into modern music systems.

Designed by Peter Comeau

The development of the LEAK Sandwich 100 was led by Peter Comeau, one of the UK’s most renowned loudspeaker designers.

In 1979, he co-founded Heybrook Hi-Fi, where he developed the award-winning HB1 and HB2 models. Since joining IAG, Peter Comeau has been responsible for the acoustic development of several well-known brands, including Wharfedale, Mission, and LEAK. From the acoustic development centers in Huntingdon, England, and Shenzhen, China, loudspeakers are created under his leadership that combine classic British audio values with modern acoustic research.

The Sandwich Diaphragm in Its Current Form

At the heart of the LEAK Sandwich 100 lies the latest evolution of the LEAK Sandwich diaphragm. The 5.75-inch mid-bass driver utilizes a structural Rohacell foam core bonded with layers of aluminum. Aerospace-grade adhesives are used in this process.

Rohacell offers an exceptionally good balance of stability and weight. This keeps the diaphragm both rigid and very light. This design significantly reduces diaphragm distortion and enables fast transient response with low distortion. The chassis is supported by a long-throw drive system featuring a powerful magnet and low-loss suspension. This keeps the driver’s movement controlled and linear even at higher volumes.

The result is a midrange that sounds natural, detailed, and expressive, combined with a bass foundation that remains precise and controlled.

30-mm fabric dome tweeter for delicate and open highs

A specially developed 30-mm fabric dome tweeter is used for the high-frequency range. It is larger than the tweeters typically found in speakers of this size class. This allows for a lower crossover frequency and higher power handling without sacrificing smooth and extended high-frequency reproduction.

The careful integration with the mid-bass driver ensures an open and finely resolved high-frequency range that reproduces rich detail without developing harshness or sharpness.

Precisely Engineered Crossover

The crossover of the LEAK Sandwich 100 was developed based on extensive measurements and intensive listening tests. It utilizes polypropylene capacitors, air-core inductors, and low-loss resistors.

The entire crossover network is designed to precisely align the phase relationships between the drivers. This attention to detail results in seamless integration across the entire frequency range. The soundstage remains cohesive, the stereo image stable, and the tonal balance convincing even when listening off-axis.

Carefully engineered enclosure

The LEAK Sandwich 100’s enclosure was designed to minimize resonance and ensure the drivers operate under optimal conditions. Internal bracing reduces cabinet vibration, while strategically placed damping materials control internal reflections.

A rear-firing bass reflex system extends the low-frequency range in a controlled manner without compromising clarity and definition. The LEAK Sandwich 100 thus combines compact dimensions with a mature and cleanly structured sound.

Classic design in a contemporary form

The LEAK Sandwich 100 follows the characteristic LEAK design language: understated, elegant, and unmistakably British. The black front panel provides a clear contrast to the cabinet finish, giving the LEAK Sandwich 100 a modern, clean appearance without straying from the brand’s design tradition.

The classic grille is removable, offering a choice between a more traditional or a more modern look.
