The ESL 2912X is the flagship model in QUAD's electrostatic speaker lineup. With its extended six-panel design for a larger radiating surface, higher sound pressure levels, greater dynamics, and extended frequency response, the ESL 2912X delivers an immersive listening experience with deeper bass and rich textures, bringing even the most complex music to life. The Beginning

The ESL-X concept was born in 2019 as the result of a comprehensive review of QUAD’s electrostatic loudspeaker production processes. Under the leadership of Paul McConville, an internationally recognized expert with over 40 years of experience in the development of QUAD ESLs, every stage of manufacturing, along with materials and processes, was thoroughly analyzed and improved.

The goal was to significantly enhance the quality and performance of the ESL series through systematic refinement and laser-precise measurement techniques. This led to the ESL-X generation - a further development of the proven 2812 and 2912 models featuring significant technical and sonic improvements.

The History

As early as 1957, Peter Walker revolutionized the hi-fi world with the first full-range electrostatic speaker. Models such as the ESL-63, ESL 2805/2905, and their direct predecessors, the ESL 2812/2912, have since set the standard for natural sound, transient response, and spatial imaging - free from cabinet coloration and with an incomparably open midrange.

The Heart of the System

Unlike conventional loudspeakers, a QUAD ESL does not use dynamic drivers but instead relies on an electrostatic principle. At its core is an extremely thin, conductive Mylar film stretched between two perforated metal plates (stators). This film is constantly charged with over 5,200 volts of DC voltage and is alternately attracted and repelled by the music signal.

The result is extremely fast, clean, and natural sound reproduction - free of distortion, particularly intermodulation, and especially precise in the midrange, where our hearing is most sensitive.

Point-source character achieved through a delay line

Thanks to the concentric ring electrode design (familiar from the ESL-63), the music signal is transmitted to the outer rings in a time-staggered manner. This creates a virtual spherical wave center -the sound appears to come from a single point in the room. The result: maximum precision in sound localization and a lifelike, holographic soundstage.

High Voltage & Protection

The stable operating voltage of over 5,200 V is generated by a special multiplier module. An intelligent protection system detects critical conditions such as arcing or overdrive and instantly mutes playback - indicated visually by a status LED.

Improvements to the ESL-X

The new ESL-X platform features a three-part circuit board structure:

• High-voltage module: generates a constant 5.25 kV for the foil charging
• Control & protection module: monitors voltages, detects faults, and activates protective mechanisms
• Low-voltage module: processes the audio signal, completely isolated from high-voltage fields

This separation minimizes interference and ensures clearer signal transmission while also providing greater operational reliability

In addition, audio transformers newly developed specifically for ESL-X and manufactured in the UK have been introduced—built according to Peter Walker’s original specifications. These transformers expand the bandwidth, improve dynamics, and eliminate unwanted modulation effects at high levels. As a result, the soundstage appears significantly more airy, transparent, and layered.

Peter Comeau, Chief Designer at QUAD, emphasizes: “The new audio transformers enhance high-frequency resolution and lend the soundstage an additional sense of lightness and transparency. The new circuit board architecture also improves bass precision and acoustic detail.”

Invisible Design

The matte black finish without a wooden frame ensures that the ESL 2912X blends discreetly into the room—in keeping with Peter Walker’s philosophy that a perfect loudspeaker should be neither heard nor seen.

Optional LED under-cabinet lighting is available.
