QUAD ESL-2812X Electrostatic, Black (Priced per pair!)

PRODUCT INFORMATION

The 2812X, a more compact model than the 2912X, features a unique four-panel design but uses the same tweeter and midrange drivers as the flagship ESL 2912X. It delivers the signature QUAD sound—ultra-transparent, rich in detail, and effortlessly natural, with a midrange so lifelike that vocals and acoustic instruments seem to appear in the room. All of this, however, is offered in a smaller, lighter, and less imposing format—standing just 1070 mm tall.

The Beginning

The ESL-X concept was launched in 2019 to fundamentally review the manufacturing of QUAD electrostatic speakers. Under the leadership of Paul McConville - a globally recognized expert with over 40 years of experience - all processes, materials, and manufacturing techniques were reevaluated. Using state-of-the-art measurement technology, key manufacturing steps such as coating, tensioning, and assembly were elevated to a new level of quality. This gave rise to the ESL-X series - a logical evolution of the classic models.

The History

Since Peter Walker introduced the first full-range electrostatic speaker in 1957, QUAD has stood for groundbreaking sound fidelity. Subsequent models such as the ESL-63, ESL-988, ESL-2805, and ESL-2812 continued to refine the electrostatic principle. Characteristic features include the effortless, transparent midrange and the unique naturalness without cabinet resonance.

The Heart of the System

At the heart of an ESL lies an ultra-thin, conductive Mylar film - ten times thinner than a human hair - stretched between two perforated metal plates. The film is charged with over 5,200 volts. The music signal causes the foil to be precisely attracted and repelled via the static fields of the stators - the sound is produced by minimal, ultra-precise movements.

Thanks to the lightweight diaphragm and uniform surface excitation, the sound remains free of coloration, especially in the sensitive midrange. Distortions - particularly intermodulation - are extremely low.

Point-Source Reproduction

The concentrically arranged high- and mid-frequency panels (familiar from the ESL-63) create a virtual point source. Through a stepped signal delay between the rings, the sound is radiated as if it were coming from a single point - this ensures precise spatial imaging with extraordinary depth.

High Voltage with Control

A special high-voltage multiplier generates a constant voltage of 5.25 kV. A protection module detects overvoltage, arcing, or faults and automatically protects the system. A status LED indicates the operating status.

Technical Advancements

The ESL-X series introduced three separate circuit board modules for the first time:
  • High-voltage module: generates a constant 5.25 kV
  • Control & protection module: detects faults, controls the protection mechanism
  • Audio signal module: processes the music signal away from disruptive high-voltage fields
This separation ensures less interference, greater stability, and maximum signal integrity.

In addition, specially developed British audio transformers are used - manufactured according to Peter Walker’s original specifications. These improve dynamics in the mid-to-high frequency range, extend the frequency response beyond 18 kHz, and minimize sound-degrading modulation effects at high levels.

The result: greater resolution, improved transparency, finer transients, and greater spatial depth.

Peter Comeau, Head of Development at QUAD, sums it up: “The ESL-X models offer that little bit extra that audiophiles will hear immediately. The new transformers and the revised architecture deliver more precise timing, greater airiness, and a noticeably more natural sound.”

Invisible Design

With its matte black finish and lack of a wooden frame, the ESL 2812X maintains a discreet visual presence - the speaker “disappears” into the room. Optional LED backlighting adds an elegant touch. Peter Walker’s vision of a speaker that disappears both sonically and visually is fully realized here.
