Musical Fidelity M6XVINYL, Phono-Stage MM/MC

M6x Vinyl – Overview

The M6 Vinyl excited record lovers worldwide when it was launched. Finally there was a phono preamplifier where you could easily set all parameters and connect up to three pickups at the same time. The brand new M6x Vinyl also follows this concept and takes the next consistent steps in many crucial areas.

M6x Vinyl – Technical background

The extreme flexibility was already the trademark of the M6 Vinyl - the M6x Vinyl is even more flexible. MUSICAL FIDELITY now has a symmetrical pickup input for the first time on a phono preamplifier in the M6 series. A few backgrounds on this. The signal from a pickup is inherently symmetrical. The cable pins that are connected to the pickup all carry a signal. With the usual color coding, white stands for “positive signal left channel”, blue for “inverted signal left channel”, red for “positive signal right channel” and green for “inverted signal right channel”. In fact, it is actually the only truly symmetrical signal in the entire industry.

Many balanced sources only offer a balanced signal that is actually asymmetrical in the original.

In the vast majority of phono installations, the signals from the blue and green pins (the respective inverted signals) are connected to ground.

Depending on the operating principle, the signal from a pickup is in the low single-digit millivolt range and even lower. Seen in this way, it of course makes a lot of sense to use every signal component that you can get from the front - and not to put half of it on ground unused.

This is where the M6x Vinyl comes into play. It has fully discrete amplifier stages for all four signal components. The main challenge is that these amplifier stages are constructed and adjusted absolutely identically so as not to produce any phase shifts in the then amplified signal. MUSICAL FIDELITY has decades of experience here - they have always relied on fully symmetrical signal processing and amplification in all amplifiers. The result: no signal, no matter how small, remains hidden from the M6x Vinyl.

A discrete circuit consists of electronic components. These are "passive" components such as resistors, capacitors and inductors, as well as "active" components such as transistors in our case. The opposite of this would be an integrated circuit that uses operational amplifiers in the signal chain.

M6x Vinyl – equipment details

The IEC button can be used to switch a subsonic filter that reduces the lowest frequencies. A real blessing for many a sub-chassis turntable. To match the output level to other components in the system, an additional gain of 6 dB is available. This means that the ambitious vinyl lover can optimally operate every conceivable pickup and enjoy his beloved record collection without compromise.

The ground switch is located next to the inputs. With the DIRECT, LIFT and SOFT positions you can react very specifically to any humming and effectively eliminate it.

The impressive power supply with a generous toroidal core transformer and four separate power supplies guarantees superior amplification without limitations.

M6x Vinyl – The sound

MUSICAL FIDELITY devices have always impressed themselves with their consistency and clear goal of reproducing music as directly and unadulterated as possible.

With the new circuit design, background noise and distortion are kept extremely low - so even the finest details can be heard unhindered. Both the musical one
Content as well as the artist's intention can come to the fore.

Not only are the pickup differences clearly highlighted regardless of the price range, the detailed and lively reproduction allows the listener to get very close to the music. Whether jazz or classical, the Musical Fidelity M6x Vinyl plays wonderfully balanced, powerful and dynamic.

As you would expect from MUSICAL FIDELITY, the M6x Vinyl is the first choice for musicality, power and expression. No matter whether Artur Rubinstein or Nils Frahm, whether Dinah Washington or Rihanna – you will have more famous visitors at home in the future.

Just typical MUSICAL FIDELITY: Powerful, dynamic, musical.
